Ellen Thorne

1941-2022

Ellen Thorne
It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother, Ellen Carrie Thorne (nee Brown), aged 80 years, of Brownsdale, Trinity Bay, at the Carbonear General Hospital, Carbonear on March 13, 2022, after a bravely fought battle with cancer. We were by her side in death as she was by our side in life.

She was born to the late Malcolm and Mildred Brown of Musgravetown on December 2, 1941 and received her Diploma in Nursing from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1963. She married the late Allan Thorne in 1966 and they made their home in Brownsdale.

Predeceased by her husband Allan Thorne, her sister Shirley Hall, and her brother Dave Brown, she has left to mourn her 3 children: Allan (Lola) Thorne, Malcolm (Jennifer) Thorne and Susanne (Shawn) Harris; her 5 grandchildren: Chris and Brendan of Calgary, AB; Katie and Milo of Red Deer, AB; and Benjamin of Paradise, NL. She is also survived by her sister Elizabeth Svendsen of BC; sister-in-law Rowena Brown of Thorburn Lake, NL; sister-in-law, Norma Thorne of St. John's, NL; brother-in-law, Chester (Evelyn) Thorne of Brownsdale, NL; and a large number of nieces and nephews as well as numerous devoted friends.

Our Mom was an accomplished, self-taught organist who enjoyed sharing her love of music with the congregates of the United Churches in her area and was an active member of the Brownsdale UCW for over 50 years, showing her love for her community in her many acts of kindness to those in need and by the numerous loaves of bread, dozens of cookies, and jars of jam made to give to those in need of a little cheer. She was a dedicated caregiver, along with her late husband, to her late in-laws for many years. Mom always made time for berry picking on the marsh in her bright orange hat! Her laughter, her strength, her zest for life and her positive attitude were known to all who loved her.

Cremation has taken place.
Funeral service to take place on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 2:00 pm. from Brownsdale United Church, Brownsdale.
Interment to follow in the United Church Cemetery, Brownsdale.
After the service family and friends are welcome to join us at Bethel United Church, Sibley's Cove for a reception hosted by our mom's friends in her honour.
We kindly request that masks be worn by those attending the funeral and reception and that social distancing etiquette be followed.

As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation or to a charity of one's choice.
